Creating a welcoming accessible place while celebrating the rich history of the church, the site it sits on and the Annex community. “In its beginnings, Walmer was characterized by openness—to different types of people, and to different ideas and projects.” – A Century for the City, Walmer Road Baptist Church 1889-1989 by Donald Goertz This site is located in the heart the Annex, one of Toronto’s most dynamic and storied neighbourhoods. It’s situated on traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. The existing church has long been a place of community and social innovation. It’s where a food bank, theatre initiative, and Canada’s first co-located daycare all thrived and a diversity of people came together for over a century. TAS and our partners, the Walmer Road Baptist Church have been working together to create a bold new vision for this site. Our proposal includes: Adaptive reuse of the existing sanctuary, to include a new space for the Walmer Road Baptist Church and a new commercial community hub. 162 new condominiums in a 20-story building. A publicly accessible courtyard for residents and members of the local neighbourhood. The commercial community hub will be a welcoming, inclusive place that restores the sanctuary’s historical role as a place for community, connection and social innovation. We are excited to evolve this place at the corner of Lowther and Walmer in the Annex with and for the community and see this project as a tremendous example of our commitment to building for impact. Transportation

The Annex is an excellent neighbourhood for environmentally friendly transportation options. Most homes for sale in this part of the city are located in areas that are very convenient for those who travel by foot; all daily needs can be carried out on foot, and countless businesses of different types can be found as well. Bicycling is very embraced in this part of Toronto because there is usually a bike-share station nearby. Thanks to plenty of nearby rapid transit stations on the Line 2 (Bloor - Danforth) and Line 1 (Yonge-University), and about 10 nearby bus lines, The Annex is very transit friendly. On the other hand, commuting by car is challenging in The Annex as most properties for sale are an extended drive from the nearest highway, and it is very difficult to park.

Services

It is a very short walk to access daycares and schools from anywhere in this part of Toronto. Residents benefit from public and private primary schools. Regarding food, it is very often feasible for home buyers in The Annex to purchase general and specialty groceries on foot. Moreover, those who are fond of dining out won't have to walk far in The Annex, where over 50 restaurants and about 10 cafes are available.

The Annex has a character that caters to a fairly diverse group of people. Most areas in The Annex are reasonably quiet, as the streets are usually peaceful, although there are still several louder areas, especially near the railway line. Greenery is reasonably prominent in this area; it is very easy to access public green spaces since there are approximately 10 of them nearby for residents to unwind in. Residents will also find that there are numerous tree-lined streets. Lastly, there are a large number of things to do in this part of Toronto for those looking for a dynamic vibe. The streets are almost always busy with people, many entertainment venues can be found nearby, and finding one of the a few bars is very easy as they are generally situated in very convenient locations.
